Some details regarding the Greek Center of UNIMA, its members and the, now, institution of the celebration of World Puppetry Day.

UNIMA (Union International de la Marionnette) was founded in 1929, in Prague. It has National Centers in about 80 countries and it is a full member of UNESCO.  The Greek Centre of UNIMA was established in 1990 and it is an open organization that unites all professionals, amateurs and friends of puppetry in Greece, while it promotes the art of puppetry through various events all over the country.

The World Puppetry Day is the celebration of our art.  Although, professionally, we are considered competitors, we participate and do our best and give performances, free of charge, in many common, collective actions, in an effort to understand different aspects of ourselves, as well as to make the statement that we have not been crushed by the self-serving reality of today’s society.  The single-handed development of our performances and our family-like relationships are reflected in both the content of our art and the feeling received by our audience: a message of optimism.  We believe that the end does not justify the means, on the contrary, the means reveal the end purpose.  We want our celebration to inspire exactly this sense of honest devotion, because we believe our puppets deserve it.

We do our job and try to do it as best as we can.  Not because we want to be ‘competitive’, ‘productive’ or ‘innovative’ but because this is the only way we can do our job.  Puppet theatre demands and promotes a culture of responsibility and ultimate self-sacrifice towards which we might come up short, but we consider it unthinkable not to try.  For us puppeteers, that we serve soulless objects in order to give them life, the self-evident demand of the master from himself is a daily quest, a silent practice  and not an idealistic front against all types of crises, from the common cold to the crises of the capitalistic economy.   Action
